In honor of Avenues’ 64 year association with the First United Methodist Church of Park Ridge, Avenues’ clients were warmly welcomed to participate in a special worship service followed by a cookout and carnival on Sunday, August 20.

Rev. David P. Aslesen with Executive Director Robert Okazaki

During the service, Executive Director Robert Okazaki discussed how instrumental our association with the church has been through the years, as what is Avenues today actually began in the Church in 1953.  It was in the Church basement that special needs children met for classes because there was no place for them in the public school system.

More than 40 participants and family members enjoyed grilled hamburgers and hot dogs along with all the trimmings, and were treated to Oberweis ice cream sundaes, cookies and brownies for dessert.  Participants also had the chance to play several games, including bingo, and winners received tickets to the Pickwick Movie Theatre.  Adding to the festivities were special balloon hats created for the clients.

Hail to the chefs!  Roger Crawford and George Shewfelt were the grillmasters, while Lisa Shewfelt (left) and Lorie Bartel were among the volunteers organizing and serving the tasty lunch.

Special thanks to the First United Methodist Church of Park Ridge for hosting the event, and to the dozen parish volunteers for lending their time and culinary talents to make this a wonderful cookout and celebration for the participants.  Click here to view more photos in the media gallery.
